Sand Preparation: The machine uses a specific type of sand mixed with a binder. This mixture is crucial as it must retain its shape after being shot into the core box but also break down easily after the metal is cast to be removed.

Shooting the Sand: The machine "shoots" or blows the sand mixture into a core box, which is the mold in the shape of the desired core. This process is typically achieved through air pressure or other mechanical means.

Compaction and Curing: After the sand is in the core box, it is compacted to ensure the core has the proper density and strength. The binder in the sand then undergoes a chemical reaction, often triggered by heat or a catalyst, causing the sand to harden into the shape of the core.

Core Removal: Once the sand core has hardened, it's removed from the core box. The core retains its shape and can be handled for the casting process.

Use in Casting: The core is then placed into the mold cavity before the molten metal is poured in. As the metal cools and solidifies, it forms around the shape of the core, creating the desired internal features.

In the cold box process, the curing of the sand mixture is induced by passing a gas (commonly amine, carbon dioxide, or sulfur dioxide) through the core. This gas acts as a catalyst, triggering a chemical reaction in the binder, which causes the sand to harden. The core box isn't heated, hence the name "cold box."

The unique aspect of a hot box machine is the curing process. The core box itself is heated, and when the sand-binder mixture comes into contact with the hot surfaces of the core box, the heat triggers a chemical reaction in the binder. This reaction causes the sand mixture to harden and take the shape of the core box.
